He Puna Taimoana is a landmark coastal wellness destination in New Brighton, Christchurch. The development includes five hot pools, a plunge pool, sauna, steam room, and relaxation areas. The architecture reconciles the dynamic nature of the ocean with human-made forms, expressed in terraced landscaping that provides shelter from prevailing winds. Buildings “wrap, crack and push out,” creating shade and refuge, while the material palette is designed to weather beautifully in a coastal environment. Winner of the NZIA Canterbury Architecture Award 2021, the project has become a beloved local destination and a catalyst for regeneration along the eastern seafront.
